Are you looking for a high-protein snack to start the day? How about some eggs? Or better yet, a basketful! This is an oldie but a goodie the whole family is sure to enjoy.
How to Make Eggs in a Basket
Our original eggs-in-a-basket recipe helps bring both fun and nutrition to the table. All you need is a cookie cutter, frying pan, five fresh ingredients and an adult present to get started. Check out our instructions below.
Our step-by-step guide will show you how to put together a mouth-watering meal in no time. Remember, this recipe requires use of the stove so don’t get started until there is an adult around to help!
Now, let’s get cooking.
Ingredients
- 3 tbsp butter
- 2 slices whole wheat or white bread
- 2 large eggs
- kosher salt
- freshly ground pepper
Step 1.
Use a cookie cutter to cut a shape out of the middle of both slices of bread. Feel free to get as creative as you want here. Pick out your favorite shape, object or character. You can even use two different cookie cutters to create a truly unique combo design!
Step 2.
Spread a tablespoon of butter on the front side of each slice of bread, including the pieces you cut out.
Step 3.
With an adult present, heat a large frying pan over medium-high heat and melt the remaining butter in the pan.
Step 4.
If the pan is large enough, place both pieces of bread and their cut-outs into the pan, butter-side down. If the pan is not large enough, just toss in one slice of bread at a time.
Step 5.
Break one of the eggs into a small bowl, then carefully pour it into the hole you’ve cut out of the first piece of bread. Do the same with the second piece and second egg. Cooke for 1 to 2 minutes, until the eggs are cooked and golden on the bottom.
Step 6.
Carefully flip both pieces of bread over and cook the other side for about 1 minute. When they’re ready, place them on a plate and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
Step 7.
If you were unable to cook both pieces of bread at once, repeat steps 4 through 6 to toast the second piece of bread and cook the second egg.
Step 8.
Place the cut-out pieces of bread into the pan and toast each side for about 1 minute. Place your finished eggs in a basket on the plate and serve immediately.
There you have it! Our own original spin on a breakfast favorite. Of course, it’s important to pepper a little diversity into any morning routine. With that, we’re bringing a few more fun twists and takes on eggs in a basket!
Cheesy Eggs in a Basket
Ready for a delicious addition to your eggs in a basket dish? Throw in some cheese! Cheddar Cheese is a popular favorite, along with Gruyere, Muenster, or even good ol’ fashion American! The variety you choose to incorporate depends on your personal taste. Of course, any change to the original dish means we have to slightly alter our cooking directions.
Once you crack the egg into the hole, place cheese triangles around the edges of the toast. Cover your skillet for a few minutes to melt the cheese. Once the eggs are cooked, throw in some salt and pepper and get ready to serve. Feel free to throw another egg onto the skillet if for more servings!
Baked Eggs in a Basket
Thought we were out of ways to mix up a traditional serving of eggs in a basket? Think again! Yet another rendition of the breakfast food classic, baked eggs in a basket uses the same ingredients as traditional recipes but changes the way the dish is prepared.
Start by preheating the oven to 375 degrees. Grab a muffin tin and butter generously. Trim your bread to fit inside. Gently crack an egg inside of each well. Sprinkle in some salt and pepper and let cook for about 15 minutes. Let sit for about 5 minutes and get ready to serve!
One-Eyed Sandwich
While it may not exactly mimic the original eggs in a basket recipe, this popular egg dish follows a similar preparation routine. Only this time, it’s a sandwich so you will only need to carve out the center of one piece of bread.
Some folks say this dish is best served on the runny side. If that sounds like your cup of tea, or shall we say egg in a basket, then make sure to take the skillet off of the heat before the eggs cook through. Salt and pepper to your liking. Serve, slice and watch the yolk run all over the plate!
